The styles of Japanese martial arts are divided into two main categories, those that are derived from the common ancestor known as Kendo, and those that are related. Kendo is the most commonly recognized style. The types of Japanese martial arts that are not related to Kendo include the following:
The first of these is the art called Shotokan, the descendants of which are Shotokan Karate, Nunchaku, the Satsui Kempo, and the Jo’s concept of Jujitsu. There are many of these martial arts, which are part of the Family or the Art of Self-Defense and there are many who do not take part in self-defense.
The second category includes a range of arts not related to Kendo and some of which include the Arts of the Lotus Birth, Kyujutsu, Kyojutsu, Chin Ju, Shaolin Kung Fu, Iga-ryu Kempo, and E.I. Fudoki.
Tai Chi is also of the Tai Chi family. It has its roots in Chinese medicine but has its origin in the arts of the Taoist philosophers.
Karate is of the same Japanese martial arts category as the types of Chinese martial arts. A broad range of styles exist today. There are many, who do not take part in any of these arts.
Kenpo is a type of Japanese martial arts of Chinese origin. Kenpo martial arts are used in China for self-defense.
Like other countries, Japan had much influence by foreign cultures in their days and traditions, and even today a country of the world may have its own name that resembles Japanese. This is true of the Japanese Shorinji Kempo, which is named after the city of Kyoto.
Other forms of Japanese martial arts that have strong associations with Western society, if not due to their existence in the West, at least to a large extent. These types of arts include the disciplines that were known as Karate, Kendo, and Shotokan. These are the Martial Arts of Japan, and there are different forms of each.
